Into the swing of things

November 15, 2013 0 Comments
So baby Rae is 3 weeks old and things are getting into a pretty workable routine here. The boys still argue; they just do it a little more quietly. They shut the door to their bedroom when they play up there.

Reagan is getting used to us. She sleeps through the dog barking - at everything, and us fussing at the boys for trying to turn their bedroom into a MMA fight cage. She's also getting better about sleeping at night. She was a might confused there for a bit.

So as everything is falling back into our new normalcy, I have started being "me" again and I am thrilled. It feels so great to feel like me again, and as such I'm going to share the first of many projects that I've been working on.

This project was inspired by a pin and lucky for me I had a spare 6 pane window hanging up in my stairwell that needed some love.
{Linked from Here!}
I first tried addressing the issue if the blazing sun coming through that window by first frosting the glass of my window but that was boring and frankly was really just a half-assed attempt.

Then inspiration struck. Vellum. I could print a black and white picture on the vellum with our laser printer and out said pictures up in the window. I played with the idea of using vintage advertisements but then I realized I had a 6 pane window and three children and a pinned idea that would work.

So off I went in search of pictures of the kids. I wanted to keep the pictures similar so I went with pictures of the kids within their first month. I found my pictures, sized them to 8x10 and then printed them out on vellum. Some double-sided tape and voila I was half done with my project.

The next step of the project was to define the kids' names and make it all look pretty. So a quick google search, some time spent in Photoshop and then I printed off three definitions. I took down my window and lined up my newly printed definitions and pulled out my sharpie paint marker. 10 minutes later I'm able to admire my work with the afternoon sun streaming through it.

Yep. There are all my babies and the definitions of their names. Apparently hubs and I like the UK. So that's my project and I must say - I really, REALLY like it. Hope you guys do too.

Measuring Up!!!

February 14, 2013 2 Comments
HAPPY HEART DAY EVERYONE!!!!!

I made you all some cookies!!!!
See??!?!? Aren't I sweet? Yea.....they're not really for you guys. They're for my boys, the little ones, because they asked nicely and now the small one is asleep on the floor. Its going to make working out interesting. He's right next to where I usually get my work out on. Fun times.

So anyways, on to the real post. I've had this project done for a little bit, and I'm still lovin' on it. :)
I made a gigantic ruler!!!! Love it!!!

The best part was the it was stupid simple to make. Just take an 8' board and stain, paint, do whatever you want to it, and then stencil on some numbers, make your hash marks and then let dry! I used Rustoleum's Sun Bleached stain and just some black acrylic paint.

Believe  it or not, but the ruler is actually hung just about right. Its like 1/4" off or something like that, which is perfect for getting a fairly good idea of measurements for the boys!
,
There are my two sweeties' measurements! Its only a small gap. :)

I decided to hang the ruler right near our front door and two-story foyer, because, well, there was room, and it showcases just how tall our ceilings are. I am really loving the stain color too! I may need to find more things to use this stain on.

I hope you guys having a rockin' V-day and come back to see what Dana's whipping up this week!

Valentine's Day Skulls!

February 12, 2013 0 Comments
So hearts aren't something my boys wear a lot of, which is ok because I'm not a 'heart' person.

But then I saw some super cute boy valentine skull shirts so I decided that my boys needed some too!

Here's what I came up with!!!
Harrison's shirt just has some white knit fabric stitched down in a cute skull pattern.  The eye patch was drawn on with a red sharpie (the 'stained' kind)

Dev's shirt is another take on the skull and crossbones.
I wish I had made his skull larger, but oh well. He likes it. :) His image was just drawn on with some of the Stained Sharpie markers.

So there are my boys' valentine's day shirts. :)

Pottery Barn Knock-Off!!!!

December 13, 2012 0 Comments
Have you ever bought something like 2 years ahead of schedule?

I have! I have!

Of course, when I bought these items I knew what I was going to do with them, it just took me two years to get to them. I have a really long list of things to do.

Guess how surprised I was to find something so very similar on Pottery Barn's site?

Super surprised. I guess it was a good idea.

So here's what I made....

Here's what they have.......
Pottery Barn's Fluted Glass Tealight Holder
Theirs has a pretty finial on the bottom, but really.....who cares?

Here's mine again.....

I got my tea light holders from AC Moore for about .50 on clearance two years back. The copper wire, well I don't know when I acquired that.  Just a couple of simple loops and VOILA! You've got yourself a knock-off. :)

Vintage Map Ornaments

December 04, 2012 1 Comments
So now that its December, I figured I'd continue on with my Christmas posts and the decorating there of. The big trees are up, but the small finishing touches are still being put in place. Different this year is that I cleaned out a lot of  my older and not so favorite ornaments.

While visiting one of my favorite Christmas inspiration spots, I spotted some great simple ornaments. They were a cardboard disc with the vignette of a dog's head printed on it and then trimmed out in silver tinsel garland. I should also mention that the tree these ornaments were on was a champagne colored tree! Champagne! Trimmed out in ivory, silver, glass and crystal. Love!

Anyways back to the ornaments I'm copying. So I knew that I could make these cardboard ornaments for cheaper than $6 a piece. I had some paper mache' discs from Michael's, Target had the gold craft tinsel, and The Graphics Fairy had the vintage map images. Then it was simply a matter of some mod podge and hot glue.

I'll show off the tree these cute little guys are on after the house is put together, but for now, look how simple and sweet they are.

Simple Wrapped Ball

November 23, 2012 0 Comments
What do you get when you combine $2 ball garland, a styrofoam ball and some hot glue?

This!!!!
Isn't she pretty?!?! I love how simple and quick she was to make too! I have some more ideas for the wrapping of beaded garland around styrofoam balls, but this is the only one I've made so far!

Knotted Napkin Rings

November 14, 2012 1 Comments
Knots are everywhere it seems. They're cute and chic as long as you're not talking about knotted thread or yarn or your headphones when you want to go for a run.

Anyways, the knots I'm talking about are definitely not the latter set of knots. These are good knots.
See? Good knots. They're also a good reuse of toilet paper cardboard rolls.  They're also super simple to make. I will now refer you to this {POST} about the knot used on these napkin rings.  Instead of yarn, I used jute and then just hot glued these babies to my quartered toilet paper roll. You can't get much simpler than that!

Small fry wanted to get in on the picture taking action, but apparently only wanted to give you a sneak peak. Can you believe that he's 3 already! One of these days I'll have to share what I did for his  birthday party. :)

More Decor Balls!

September 05, 2012 0 Comments

So a while back I pinned some cute decor balls that had been done from styrofoam balls and push pins, and some faux capiz shell decor balls.

I made these a few months ago and just never shared them, but I'm rectifying  that now!

Aren't they pretty?

The pushpin ones were super easy. I bought some pushpins from the $1 store and just put them around the styrofoam. I did  end up gluing some of them down, but I just used some white glue for that.

I love the texture of them!

So for the faux capiz shell ones, I got some bubble wrap from the $1 store and then ironed a  bunch of sheets together and then cut them into strips and then cut those strips into squares and then cut circles out of those squares. Then the glue gun was busted out!

I'm thinking I may have to go get some more bubble wrap because I have a lot of ideas for the faux capiz shell look!

So that's my share for today!

Have a great day guys!

Busting out the Sharpies Again!

July 25, 2012 0 Comments
Did you know that my little guy is 2.75 years old? I started this blog when he was 4 months old. Can you believe it? I can't.

Now that he's getting older though, I'm starting to get the itch to change up his room from nursery to kid room. Not that the safari theme we have in there is overly baby, but I still want something a bit more grown up for him.

I haven't picked out new paint  colors yet, other than to decide that I want to go with blue, yellow or orange, and gray, but I have decided that I'd like to go with an urban theme.

You see, small fry, is always asking to go. I wanna go, is a very common phrase from him.

We recently switched up beds in the boys' rooms so Harrison got Dev's old full bed, up from his toddler bed, and along with that came Dev's dresser and nightstand. Harrison had the bigger dressers and night stand so we gave those to Devlin since his clothes are all bigger and he's started to acquire more 'stuff'.

Once we got the furniture switched around, Harrison's room needed more light. I have crap tons of lamps and lampshades lying around. I know I have a problem, but I just  don't really care. So I found a lamp with a cute pull chain so Harrison can turn it on and off as he pleases. It's also got a nice long drum shade on it, and that shade just happens to be white! Blank canvas!

So here's what I came up with!

I did a google search for postmark collages, and then sorted by images. I found one that I  like and then printed off a full size image of it. I then just traced those postmarks onto the lampshade with my sharpie fabric markers. I love how the whole thing came out and I think that the colors on the lamp shade will work perfectly with the theme and a pop of color when I get his room done. :)

Now to start thinking  about Dev's room and the dining room, and then, and then, and then. :)

Duct Tape to the Rescue!

July 03, 2012 0 Comments
Yesterday I shared my pretty new dress, and we all know that pretty new dresses need pretty shoes to go with them. Except I had no pretty white shoes to go with my pretty new dress. How many times can I say pretty?  Enter Pinterest...

A while back I pinned this great redo from AGAAGG.

Aren't those adorably cute shoes? That houndstooth pattern is vinyl. Yep, you heard it right. Its vinyl. Do you see my light bulb starting to get brighter? I don't have any vinyl (well none that I'd put on shoes) but I do live near a Target that sells all sorts of fun duct tape!

So after fetching some white duct tape, I gathered my supplies (shoes, duct tape, craft knife, brown paint pen) and got to work.  I forgot to take before pictures of both shoes undone, but you get the idea. :)

The original shoes weren't bad, but like I said - I needed white shoes to go with the outfit.

After applying all of my duct tape the shoes needed something more. So here's where the paint pen comes  in. The shoes had decorative stitching on them originally, so I just drew some brown stitches on the duct tape. Worked like a charm.
Aren't they adorable? I love that I was able to reuse some old shoes. Although during the wedding I did remember why I stopped wearing said shoes (about 4 years ago) and that's because as my feet swell, the shoes don't and it makes for some painful feet. Oh well, at least I looked good while my feet weren't swollen. :)

Dictionary Picture Mat

June 13, 2012 0 Comments
I'm working on Harrison's 1st year scrapbook. I know he'll be turning 3 in October. I'm only a little behind. :)

So while I was going through pictures and getting ideas and trying to organize photos, I came across the photos from our vacation last summer to OBX.

I found this picture of the boys.

How adorable is that pose? We were on a dolphin cruise and Harrison just came up behind Devlin and they stayed in this pose for several minutes. Steve was quick with the camera and snapped several of these photos.

So I picked my favorite shot, and printed it out on some 4x6 photo paper I had lying around. Then I had to find a frame for it. Nothing like planning this out!

After locating an 8x10 frame that I had hidden (between fabric totes), I cleaned it up and then tried to figure how the best way to showcase this photo. Enter poster board and my 1974 dictionary.

I cut out a mat from my poster board, and arranged the photo in a museum gallery kind of way. Then pulled out the dictionary and went straight for the b's. I found the entry for brothers and ripped the page out. Then I laid the page out the way I wanted, I had to rip out another page (found the beach page) to finish covering my mat. With Mod Podge in hand I glued the dictionary pages down and folded the edges over the edge of the poster board. After I got the picture taped to the poster board. I took a sharpie and added some arrows and things to the definitions I wanted people to notice.

Then I centered my picture in the opening and put my picture together. I hung this picture up in our gallery wall on the stairs.

So there's my favorite photo from our vacation last year and the boys have a nice spot together on our gallery wall. Not bad for a 5 minute project.
