I'm So Excited!

April 29, 2011 1 Comments

While I was watching one of my cooking shows one day, Mike remarked to me, "You know what I want to see? I want to see one of these TV chefs not excited about one of their dishes. 'This recipe, it's okay, kind of eh'." I laughed and told him I didn't see that happening anytime soon, but it made me think about the joy-factor of cooking. I totally get it! I mean, I get really excited about my own food, and I'm nowhere near Claire Robinson's or Sunny Anderson's level. If I was, I might explode with excitedness. This past week I was more excited than usual about my big dinner of the week, Easter dinner.

I like to call Christmas Jesus' Birthday and Easter Resurrection Day. Here I am, all ready to go to church that morning...
Yeah, my Easter dress is pretty untraditional, but so is my dinner, so it all goes together. See, I'm just the kind of person that likes to break tradition and try different things. I don't even like to make turkey on Thanksgiving (crazy, I know), but I do because Mike insists on having turkey in some form on Thanksgiving. I do like to goose on Christmas, but I refuse to make ham or lamb on Easter. Don't get me wrong, I love both, and I understand the symbolism of lamb, but it's just not my style to do what I know lots of other people will do. Peer pressure has never really had an effect on me. That being the case, I decided on ribs this year. Yes, RIBS!

I-Spy with my little eye

So I'm going to have to start off with an apology. I know I learned somewhere that you are never supposed to start something off with an apology, but I've forgotten what and when I learned this, so as you can tell I was a stupendous student. :)

Anyways, on to my apology. I have no idea how to photograph a quilt, and so the pictures that are here today are not the best, in my opinion of course. :)

So enough digressing about my {lack of} photography skills and lets get to these quilts.

How Could I Have Forgotten?

April 22, 2011 1 Comments

Sometimes I start a blog entry with one idea in mind and, by the end of it, something's changed. Sometimes it changes without me noticing. Last week was one of those times. I mentioned having two recipes for my "Goodbye to Winter (I Hate Snow) Girl's Night", but I ended up only having one. So sorry, I completely forgot to include the second one! That being the case, here it is, part two of the comforting, girl's night recipes.

A Promise is a Promise...

April 21, 2011 1 Comments
So I had planned on at least trying to improve the tablescape, but didn't happen. Yesterday was so busy!

Mom is not cleared to drive yet, but she doesn't need surgery {score!!}; however she is still only in the splint and ace bandage for another week.  So the boys and I were her chariot service yesterday. We had a lot of fun, and I got some of my errands done too, but when we did get home there was very little time to get everything done. So it didn't all get done, some because  of time and some because of lack of tools.

So without any further yammering on my part - Here's the Easter tablescape. Not my best work, but passable I think. :)

In the Interim

April 20, 2011 0 Comments
So I have several projects in the works, but I have no pictures of them. Nor are they done.

So that leaves me with a whole lotta nuttin' to show you, BUT I can revisit last year's Easter tablescape. 1 - because I'm not completely happy with this year's tablescape and 2 - it was early in my bloggy life, so some of you guys may not have seen it. :)

So here we go! :)

Matching Madras

So I don't know if you guys saw this or not but the Straight Stitches' facebook page has over 100 likes! Isn't that totally awesome?!?!? I think so.

So I want to do a giveaway but I don't know what to giveaway so there's a poll up there....on top of this post. Go vote for what you want to be given away :)

So now onto the outfits I made for a friend's babies. :) Ok, well only one of them is a baby. She's 10 days older than H, but the other baby is 3. That still counts as a baby right? So here's the sneak peak I showed on the facebook page last week.

Girl's Night In!

April 15, 2011 3 Comments

Craft Tip: I know, this is weird coming from me. You're probably wondering, "Um, what about the food?". I promise that is next. I just want to share a great craft tip that served me very well today. I took the day off today to finish painting my living room (It's only taken two years), and there was a pretty tough spot to deal with. Namely, a little sliver of a corner between two doors. Behold my little buddy, the tool that got me through this challenge!

Faux Bois Anyone?

April 14, 2011 5 Comments
So yesterday, I showed off the completed nightstands that I did for my mom. Today is their story. :)

I love a lot of painting techniques, but sometimes I'm afraid to try them, and sometimes I have to get a piece painted and let it sit in my living room for a week before I decide what the finishing touches on it are going to be. :)

Sneak Peek - Faux Bois!

April 13, 2011 0 Comments
I know that it's super late for me to be writing a post for today, and I had one started, but with everything going on this week - well, I didn't get to finish it, but I did not want to leave you guys without a post today.

So here's the sneak peak of the nightstands I repainted for Mom. :)

Tomorrow I will share what I did to these beauties and where they started from. :)

Good Vibes Needed

April 11, 2011 1 Comments
So I told you yesterday that I'd share more on our eventful evening.

Let me start off with saying that its a shame such a wonderful evening ended this way, but here's the preface:

Mom and Dad invited the fam over for dinner on Sunday evening. Steve was not feeling well, so only the little guys and I went.

We had a wonderful dinner. The boys were well behaved, and Dad got to spend time with them. Harrison especially liked being fed some succotash from him. :)

So then the plan was to get ice cream, which we did. We stopped at the Carvel Ice Cream stand and all had some small cones, and Harrison crawled around the table and helped all of us eat ours. It was super cute and he got super messy and got me super messy. Oh this is also why a project I was going to share this week is going to have to get washed first. He got chocolate ice cream on me from my shoulder down to my pants. Gotta love that kid. :)

So after ice cream, I suggested we all get some coffee (shocking, I know) and that I'd get the tab while the boys played  on the playground. Well en route to coffee, Dev pipes up from the backseat that he has to go potty. So as soon as we get to the restaurant, Dad hops out of the car and pulls Dev out the very back and takes him to the men's room. Meanwhile, the rest of us are getting out of the car. Mom's got Harrison and I've got purses and the sippy cup and we proceed to cross the parking lot. Well it was dusk, and none of the lights were on yet. Mom and I didn't see the pothole in the parking lot. Her foot found it, she lost her balance and her ankle turned. On the way down, Mom twisted so as not to fall onto Harrison, but in the process her knee and lower leg find the pavement. Then her right arm does - with all 26 lbs of Harrison on it. She's hurt. I drop to the ground with her and get Harrison off her arm, but quickly realize that she's really hurt. I put Harrison in her lap and run to the men's room to get Dad.

Dad comes out and tells me Dev is still in the stall, so I run out with him to get Harrison and call 911. Mom's arm is really hurting. I run back in, only to find that Dev was no longer in the restroom, and some very nice gentleman told me that Dev had left, after I burst into the men's room looking for him. As I come out of the restroom, Dev passes me on his back to the front of the restaurant. I grab him, and go back outside.

There's now a small crowd around Mom, Dad is with her and he tells me to put the boys in the car. So I open the liftgate and tell Dev to play his DS and to let Harrison watch so that he's occupied as well. Well the one time Harrison doesn't want to be distracted by the DS is now. Great. Out comes the cell phone. I tell Harrison to play with that and to not move. Dev is in charge. I go back to Mom. The ambulance has finally arrived.

They load Mom up and take her on to the hospital. I take Dad back to his house to get his car, then we all hightail it to the hospital, while calling Steve to tell him to come out here so that he can get the kids.

After some time in the ER, the kids visit with Mom and distract her quite well, but then its time for them to go to bed. I stay with Mom and Dad. Mom is not a good patient. We find out that she's dislocated her right elbow and has fractured her arm.

So after 4 hours, we finally leave the ER with Mom in a splint and directions to see an ortho specialist the next day.

Today we find out that Mom's arm is broken, but in a week they'll be able to tell if she's going to need surgery or not on the bone.

So I'm only asking for some good healing vibes from all of you readers. Mom needs them. She's doing much better today, but its her right arm and she's right handed. No sewing, knitting, or embroidery.

This is going to be a very long healing time for her, but I think Dev and I are going to make her some sling bling to brighten up that ugly blue sling. :) By the way, there was not a scratch on Harrison. Mom protected him from the fall. I just wish it hadn't been at the expense of her arm.

Thanks so much for reading my story guys.

Egg Hunt Mantle

April 11, 2011 2 Comments
Sorry for the delay with today's post, but we had an exciting day yesterday. I had my first Tastefully Simple party {yay!} and then the boys and I went over to Mom and Dad's for dinner, which was lovely! Then we all got  ice cream and Harrison ate some of everyone's.  Then we had some more excitement that I'll share more later.

Anyways, I'm so excited to show off the Easter mantle. I decided as I was pulling it all out and putting it together that an Egg Hunt would be my theme, so without any further ado here's my mantle!

Facebook

April 08, 2011 1 Comments
So I'm hiding from the kids right now. Small fry is beating up on his brother {again} and Dev is too nice to fight back. I wish he would. Small fry is getting to be a bully. At least to Dev. The Rat.

Anyways, while I'm avoiding my children and the impending screech-fest that will happen. I want to ask plead with you guys to go check out Straight Stitches Facebook page. Its had 89 'likes' for forever, and I'd be super duper excited and happy if we hit 100 'likes' over the weekend.

What do you say? Do you think I can get 11 more likes? Pretty please? I'll even throw in a cherry. :)

Have a happy weekend all, the hubs furlough starts tonight. Terrific. Yippee even.

Who Cares If It's Not Low-Fat?

April 08, 2011 0 Comments

You know what drives me crazy? When people feel the need to tell me how unhealthy something is. Even worse, when they feel the need to read off the nutritional information. I know what's good for me (fresh fruits and veggies, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.) and what's not (fats, salt, etc.). You know what, though? I eat well most of the time, so it's okay if I want to indulge once in a while.

Today's recipe should go next to "indulgence" in the dictionary. Mike and I have started doing half of our dates at home, which works out great because every at-home date night is an opportunity for me to try a new recipe. This was from Claire Robinson's show "Five Ingredient Fix".

CSI anyone?

April 07, 2011 0 Comments
So I got rid of my sentimental photos of the boys in lieu of some new art and tchotchkes, but I still wanted something meaningful and unique to the family, so then I thought what's more unique than a thumbprint?

So this is what I came up with!

Updating the TV Space

April 04, 2011 2 Comments
A while ago I found these great metal picture frames at Kirkland's for $6 a piece {clearance!} and I was so happy with them, because they were perfect for our family room.  In each of the 4 picture frames I decided to put pictures of  the boys on the day they were born and then the with Steve and I. I loved how personal and sentimental it all was. Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates doesn't hurt either. :)

Because Who Doesn't Like Bacon and Eggs?

April 01, 2011 1 Comments

Really? Do you know anyone who doesn't like bacon and eggs? I mean, anyone who doesn't like bacon just isn't human, and eggs come in so many different forms--omelet, fried, scrambled, poached, etc.--there's something for everyone. There was one Saturday not too long ago that I was really into eggs and bacon. I had it for breakfast and dinner. Prepare yourself; it's about to get delicious.

Have you seen Dana?

April 01, 2011 0 Comments
I was expecting to see a Friday Food Frenzy post today. I was looking forward to my weekly recipe fix, but there's not one here.

Have any of you seen my sister? She seems to have disappeared.

I have posts I could share, but I don't want to yet. :) They're for next week.

So instead I'll share things that have been going on around here.

Dev has three loose teeth! These are his first, so I'm really excited about making a tooth fairy box for him. :)

I haven't been to the dentist in 6 years...I know, I know. I'm already castigating myself over it. I have cavities...a lot of them, and I need to loose a few teeth, but I also found out that I inherited my mother's gum disease. Yay for that. Dana has it too (I'm sure she'll love me sharing that, but she's not here today, is she?). Luckily its not too bad yet, so after some smile fixing, I get to tackle that hurdle. You guys wanted to know all of this didn't you? :)

Let's see - what else has been going on? Oh yea, I added a couple of new pillows to the shop.
See the rest of the pictures {HERE}
I have two of these little beauts. I have more planned, but I'm waiting on some of the set to dry, and then I'll get them added this weekend.

Oh I wanted to make banana bread this AM, but I had no sour cream and the butter wasn't softened. Sadness. I guess I'll have to make the bread later. :(

Ok guys - well hopefully Dana shows up, but if not I may have to come up with another post. :)

BTW - HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S DAY!
