A House Divided

October 24, 2011 0 Comments
So when you think of divisions its usually between football teams, college ball teams, or math equations. And you'd be correct. All of those have or include divisions.

But in my house we have divisions in opinion. We also have divisions in healthy vs. unhealthy. Let's start on the opinions first.

I put up altered curtains and I'm not sure I like them. All the men in my house like them, but now lets  look at the 2nd division in the house - healthy vs. unhealthy. All of the men in my house are sick. The boys are in the throws of pneumonia and Steve is ill too, nothing definitive on what he has, but he's on two different meds to treat his symptoms. So in a house where I'm out numbered in everything, usually I get final say in decorating.

But all of the sick men decided they like my new curtains and I'm wrong because I don't like them, even though my argument is I'm not sick and therefore thinking more clearly. That did not hold any water. I'm now thinking of going with the argument, I'm the only healthy one in this house and if you want a pleasant recovery then you'll stop arguing with me about the curtains that I altered and put up.

I like the ring of the next argument! Don't you? Anyways, enough of my bitching even though I am bitter about being the only healthy one. Do you know how much whining goes on in a whole full of sick men? I should win  some type of award. Really I should. Or I'm going to move in with Mom for a few days.

So anyways, here are the pictures.

Here's what was there

I love that these curtains are so much brighter and  lighter. The curtains are from Ikea and they have a linen look. I was going to tell you how I made them, but since I'm not in love with them. I don't think I am. I think I will eventually take them down (when I get bothered by them enough) and then alter them again and then I will share what I did. Unless you guys like them and think I should share what I did.

I'm going to go pick up some prescriptions now - gotta get this house healthy!

And here's the snag....

July 18, 2011 1 Comments
Today was super frustrating.......SUPER FRUSTRATING!

Yes, it needed saying twice.

Woke up in a less than stellar mood because Harrison was being super needy and decided that he would no longer use the chest at the end of the bed to climb up and snuggle with me. No, he decided that whining was the way to go. Awesome.

7:22 is when I roll out of bed and head downstairs to feed the natives. Harrison decides that the table looks better painted in milk. Devlin has developed a hearing problem. I'm having to repeat myself multiple times.

9:03 is when I'm standing in line while the gals at the Wegman's coffee shop are making up some oh so delicious peppermint mocha for me. Harrison is having a smoothie and Dev is munching on a lollipop (the bank teller indulged him). All is well. For now.

10:30ish. Kids are in the car. Car is on. I'm loading up groceries into the back of the car, and then the lady who is parked next to me tells me she's wedged her car against Dev's open door. I don't know why Dev's door was open. Honestly, I thought it was closed, but the poor woman is upset because she thought she had looked. Never fear! I suggest that she back her car up so that the motion closes the door and thus frees said door. She does it. It works. I'm a genius. Back to loading those damn groceries.

By 11 I'm starting my prep for painting. All the food has been put away and the kids are watching a movie. Taping and cleaning commences. Then lunch, and finally around 1 and I start painting. The hallway is going to look amazing :)

4:30 pm - I've got the bigger half (the side with more wall space) cut in and the first coat of paint on. Yay! \

CRAP!

The boys have swim lessons at 5:50 and they're hungry, and I have to drive to the other side of Warrenton. Leftovers it is!  Dinner was a debacle in itself. I won't bore you with its intricacies, but suffice to say by the end of it I was willing to sell/give both boys to the highest bidder.

5:45 - we arrive at the Rec Center and haul into the facility to change for Harrison's class. Mom meets us there. We end up being late, but both boys had a terrific class and milkshakes were had by all.

9:00ish - Children are in bed and asleep or very close to it! Finally - MOM TIME! I finish cutting in the other side of the hallway and then use up the rest of the gallon to just get to the study. Oh, and I notice this fun tidbit on the wall.
That is the last full wall I completed before breaking for dinner. I never noticed that Harrison had paint on his hands, and there is no evidence that he touched anything before being called to the table for dinner. I may frame this, because every time I walked by it, I chuckled- a lot.

10:45 - I'm busting open the other gallon, and I think to myself, "Well this doesn't look right. It's too ugly." Well I was right. Here's what the last gallon of  paint looks like against the other gallons.
Definitely not the same color.

Great.

I'm now being forced into a furlough because of a mistint. LE SIGH! Which is why I'm writing this post now.

I hope you guys had a better day than me!

Here's to a better tomorrow!

Fail, fail, fail!

May 13, 2011 3 Comments

Warning: Somewhat long, whinging post.

Sometimes in life you just have to accept that things are the way they are and there’s nothing you can do about it. This week was a “lesson” in that. This was the plan. I’d bust out my new toy…

…on Wednesday and break it in making what is possibly the most difficult thing (to me) to make—bread. Oh yes, you’ve heard Heather wax poetic about bread baking and how she’s done it from scratch herself on multiple occasions. I just may not having baking genes in me. I am speaking from poor experience, however, and am getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning.

As I said, the plan was to bake bread from scratch on Wednesday. Unfortunately I woke up on Wednesday morning at 3am with stomach pyrotechnics. I was sick. Really sick. I had to return to the bathroom throughout the morning to repeat the show. Around 7:30am, I found out that Sally (the good friend from England who’s here for two weeks visiting me) was sick as well. Lovely! One more thing we can bond over: Food poisoning. Long story short, Sally and I were laid up all day taking turns in the bathroom, trying to keep food down, and falling asleep randomly. I am very happy to say we were back to our old selves come Thursday, but, even though it did only last a day, food poisoning sucks!!! Do you know the worst part of it? It makes you scared to eat again. That’s just cruel.

So Thursday came and I had a new plan. I’d prepare my bread before dinner and bake it after dinner was done. It wouldn’t take long to bake, and it would cool while we were out at the baseball game we had tickets to.

Sidenote: Do not mistake me for a baseball fan. I’m so not. Sally said she wanted to go to an American sporting event, however, and what better choice than America’s pastime?

Okay, so dinner’s cooked. I’m just about to take the biscuits (or "soft scones" as Sally calls them) out of the oven, the bread is ready to go in, and the power goes out. Awesome. It’s not even raining that badly outside. It wasn’t raining bad enough to cancel the baseball game anyway. Well, I can’t bake my bread now, but I have to leave in forty-five minutes. *Sigh* Okay, we’ll just have to see if the power comes back on before we leave. We can always leave a little late. It doesn’t, so my bread stays where it is on the counter, un-baked. We came home from the game like three and a half hours later. Why does baseball take so freakin’ long? Now that we were home again, my bread had risen up pretty good. Here’s where I went wrong. I thought the bread would rise further in the oven, so I punched it down a little. When I took them out, they hadn’t risen any. Crap. Okay, well, let’s give it a try. It’s…okay. It’s crunchier than bread should be, but that fixes itself a little when it's heated up in the microwave wrapped in a paper towel. I’m not super-excited about this recipe, but circumstances weren’t really great either, so let me share it with you anyway.

Sunflower Seed & Honey Wheat Bread

2 pkg (1/4 oz each) active dry yeast
3-1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
1/4 cup bread flour
1/3 cup canola oil
1/3 cup honey
3 tsp salt
6-1/2 to 7-1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup sunflower kernels
3 Tbsp butter, melted

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the bread flour, oil, honey, salt and 4 cups whole wheat flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in sunflower kernels and enough remaining flour to form a firm dough.
Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch dough down; divide into three portions. Shape into loaves; place in three greased 8-in. x 4-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with melted butter. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool. Yield: 3 loaves (12 slices each).

Here are all the ingredients gathered and ready for action. You'll notice it's a somewhat long shopping list.

Ahhhh, there she is. My Beatrice in action. She works beautifully! I couldn't ask for more. :-)

This is the stage where it got dodgy. I don't really know what a "firm dough" looks like, so I stopped mixing when it was kind of a sticky ball. Is this what a firm dough looks like?

Kneading was really fun and was a good workout. :-) It's a great way to get some aggression out.

I really wish I had taken a picture of the dough before I had punched it down. It came all the way up to the edge of the bowl. Coooooooool!

I don't have three loaf tins, just two, so I had to make due on the third one.

Okay, this was pre-mistake. I really should have let it be. The dough didn't rise so much that it took over the counter like I thought it might. *Sigh* Why didn't I just leave it?

And here they are cooked. Like I said, I never should have smushed it. Well, it is what it is...

Like I said, I may not have the baking genes in me, but I may just need a do-over. We'll have to wait and see.

Despite everything, something happened previously this week that makes me forget about all my troubles from before. That is…

…this! Yes! We went to the happiest place on earth earlier this week. It was a gift to Sally and Mike since neither had ever been. SO much fun! Didn’t I mention last week that I’d have a picture of Sally and I in front of a different castle? :-)

Sneak Peak

November 04, 2010 0 Comments
I'm such a bad planner sometimes. I'm impulsive. I'm impulsive about a lot of things, but I love to have a plan. Confused? Me too. I change my plans, and then expect people to keep up with me because I've  spoken out loud about the changes I've made. Even if I've gone over a couple of different scenarios. I can keep up.....can't everyone? :)

So as to the chili recipe....sorry. Plans changed. :) I'll share it next week. Steve suggested that I show you guys a sneak preview of the laundry room, which is coming along. Its taking a little longer than I anticipated because  I found a project that I've asked Stephen to help me with, and a sinus infection has decided to come visit me.

Picture Me a Fail

July 20, 2010 1 Comments
So when Dev wants us to take his picture he says Picture Me! Well, I'd like to show you some pictures of a fail in Harrison's bathroom. You see, I was going to show you the boys bathrooms today, but I didn't want to do the good news and then end it with the one fail of the project so far, so I will be leading off with the fail and then tomorrow I'll show you the grand finale!  After that I'll also be showing at least one how-to of something I did. :)

Hang on......moving the computer from a small boy that is cruising and thinks my mouse and the mouse transmitterey-thing are his play things.

Ok now that I'm in an unnatural typing position, I can continue. :) Also if anyone knows of a way to get my teething infant to stop trying to use my lower leg as a teething ring, that would be super!  :)

And without further ado.....On with the show!

Not the week for crafts...

July 10, 2010 5 Comments
So I've gotten nada done this week. Next week will be better I promise. I have lots of  ideas.....need more time.

I was hoping to have the floor candlesticks done, but yea....I accidentally painted them chrome instead of aluminum. I should probably organize my spray paints so that I don't have to  look at the paint remnants on the nozzle to guess the color.
